Introduction : The black headed munia are also known as chestnut munia.It is a species of the order Passeriformes and family is Estrildidae.
How to identify
Male and female black headed munia are look alike but the head of male munia is bolder and wider with a blunter and heavier appearing bill. His rump may be marginally brighter. Another difference is that only the male can sing.
Plumage of the adult munia is mainly chestnut brown to mahogany in body, wings and tail. The colur of the head is black. Beak is study and pale grey in colour.
Young bird's colour is pale brown and the colour of the head is not black at young stage.
Nesting
The nest of munia is ball shaped and it's entrance is in lateral position. They build the nest with grass blade and hays. Munia generally build their nest in bushes and small treesFemale lays 4 to 7 white eggs.
Munia are seed eaters. Though they like the seeds of grass but like other seed eating birds, they also feed on insects. They always live in a flock.
Their song are not very melodious. Song of munia sounds like the mewing of kitten. It starts with a series of very low click and followed by extended whine, then ends in a series of slurred notes.
Their habitat is reed beds, paddy field, grass and scrub. Weight of munia is about 9 gms. and size is about 11 cm.
Distribution
The black headed munia are found in India, Bangladesh, Burma, China, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam.
